Here are some statistics on voting in Maine - for you political wonks....

Mid-Term Elections

In the 2018 midterm election, Maine had the 4th highest voter turnout in the U.S.among residents who 18 to 24 years old:  36.4% up 5.8% from the 2014 midterm.  This analysis was done by CIRCLE who attributed the (relatively) high turnout in this age group to the facts that 17 year olds can preregister in Maine and possibly to the fact that the first use of Ranked Choice Voting in 2018 may have made this age group more confident that their vote would count.

Across the US, the turnout for 18 to 29 year olds increased across the US in the 2018 midterm, going from 24% in 2014 to 36% in 2018, showing the largest increase of any age group (US Census Bureau).  The turnout in this age group remains the smallest of any age bracket.

Presidential Elections

Overall, Maine has a pretty good record of voter turnout (US Census) and, in Maine, averaged across all age brackets, 91% of the people who were registered then voted (91=71/78, see below).  The opportunity for early voting (by absentee ballot) and for voting day registration may contribute to our high turnout rate compared to other states.  The results below are for the 2016 Presidential Election and the voting turnout is therefore higher than the 2018 midterm.
